Abo - Salinas Pueblo Missions

Abo is the most accessible of the the Salinas Pueblo missions. It's less than a mile off of highway 60 and the park's paved drive goes directly into and through the ruins. The parking lot and visitor center are only steps away from the main mission ruin. They are so close that the modern facilities sort of intrude on the site. I prefer the way the other missions are arranged. At Gran Quivira and Quarai the parking lot and road are several hundred feet away from the ruins.

Abo had been the site of a Puebloan town for hundreds of years before the first Spanish arrived in 1581. The Spanish established their mission at Abo in 1622. The community subsequently fell apart and was abandoned by 1673. After that, the site was not occupied again until 1865.
