Desert Center is a formerly prosperous highway services center just off of interstate 10 between Indio and Blythe. The Desert Center exit would have been the one used by the workers and residents of the now abandoned Eagle Mountain iron mine and town. There were no stores or gas stations open for business in Desert Center when I visited in 2013. There was a closed/abandoned cafe and were two abandoned gas stations at the exit. There was also a cluster of abandoned cottages that I presume had been a motel at some point. The closed off Eagle Mountain site is about 11 miles North of Desert Center on Kaiser Road. The Eagle Mountain pumping station and a large new solar plant are just off Kaiser road towards Eagle Mountain. There is also a small operating resort a few miles North of Desert Center. Highway 177 and highway 62 are interesting roads to take if you want to explore the desert.
