The White Furniture Company operated this factory in Mebane North Carolina from 1881 to 1993. The factory has been empty and deteriorating since White Furniture went out of business in 1993.

Mebane was a small industrial town that grew after a railroad connecting Raleigh with Charlotte was built in 1855. The route of that railroad became the main transportation corridor in the state and is now the general route of Interstate 85 and 40. From the 1920s until recently Mebane had several small factories producing textiles and furniture. Most of those factories closed in the 1990s. Mebane has continued to grow in spite of loosing most of it's industrial employers over the last 20 years. It has been increasingly enveloped by the metropolitan sprawl that extends outwards from Raleigh/Durham, Burlington and Greensboro. Mebane has a small but nicely preserved downtown with many late 19th and early 20th century buildings.

My friend Damon Lapas took these pictures in 2014. He uses vintage cameras with black and white film and does no post-processing on any of his photos. I love the atmospheric results.
