Nelsonville Brick Kilns

Nelsonville is a nice, former coal mining and brick manufacturing town in the Hocking valley coal district. Nelsonville is currently being gentrified because of it's proximity to Athens (Ohio University) and it's lovely historic downtown. The ruins of one of several brick kilns that operated in Nelsonville in the late 1800s has been preserved in a small park just outside of town on Lake Hope Drive. These kilns were built in 1880. There are a few other remnants of the brick works in the woods behind the kilns. There are several other interesting places to visit in the area including Shawnee, Haydenville, Glouster, and New Straitsville.
