Silver City Nevada

Silver City Nevada

Silver City Nevada (You might get yelled at if you stand here)

Silver City was established in 1859 soon after silver was discovered in the Comstock Lode. The mines near Silver City were never as productive as the mines near Gold Hill and Virginia City and as a consequence Silver City never had a very large population. Silver City's current population is a little over one hundred. There are several mine relics in and around Silver City. Most of the mining related structures that I saw seemed to have been built in the 20th century- possibly 1920s-50s? None of the old mines are accessible and there didn't seem to be much else for a visitor to do on the two occasions I've passed through. Gold Hill is an interesting town a couple of miles North. The increasingly touristy Virginia City is about 4 miles north of Silver City on highway 342. More about Silver City at Western Mining History.com.
